What to Expect from Your First Pumping Session

It is important to know that your body produces the right amount of milk your baby needs at birth. The volume of milk you produce will dramatically increase during the first month of your baby’s life.
- Your baby’s age
- If you have reached full production
- The amount of time since your last breastfeeding or pumping
- The time of day
- How much practice you’ve had with your pump
- Whether you’re relaxed or stressed
If you are breastfeeding exclusively, the following expectations are average predictions:
- When pumping between feedings, expect to pump about half of the amount you would produce during an average feeding.
- When pumping for a missed breastfeeding, expect to pump the amount you produce during an average feeding.
